Check out both trailers after the jump, and I’ve also collected a shitload of stills from the movie and anothe rposter, too. It turns out that a teaser trailer was released in July, which I totally missed, but now there’s a new, longer one, which is finally what woke me the fuck up about this movie. Shit, I’ll be thrilled if it’s just decent. The Collected John Carter of Mars, Volume 3: Swords of Mars / Synthetic Men of Mars / Llana of Gathol / John Carter and the Giant of Mars / Skeleton Men of Jupiter by Edgar Rice Burroughs: Omnibus 8-11: Complete Barsoom Series by Edgar Rice Burroughs: collection 1-11: Under the Moons of Mars: New Adventures on Barsoom by John Joseph Adams. I really, really, really, really hope this movie is good. It was directed by Academy-award winner Andrew Stanton ( Wall-E) and starts Taylor Kitsch ( Friday Night Lights) as Carter, Willem Dafoe as Tars Tarkas, and the delectable Lynn Collins ( X-Men Origins: Wolverine) Princess Dejah Thoris. So, I became childishly excited when I saw this morning that Disney has made a movie based on A Princess of Mars called JOHN CARTER.

When I was much younger and even more geeky than I am now, I spent many happy hours on Barsoom, reading all the books in the Mars series more than once (I read all the Tarzan books, too, plus just about everything else Burroughs wrote).
In the Martian language used by Burroughs in his books, the name of Mars is Barsoom.
It later appeared as a complete novel only after. Written between July and September 28, 1911, the novel was serialized as Under the Moons of Mars in the pulp magazine The All-Story from February to July 1912. (it was originally serialized in a magazine called All-Star). John Carter was the lead character in the first novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, set on a fictionalized version of Mars known as Barsoom. This series of novels shaped the 'Pulp Era' of science fiction, and even non-literary media like comic books and movies. This coming February will be the 100th anniversary of the novelization of the first book in the series, A Princess of Mars. Barsoom is the setting of Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars saga, staring American Civil War veteran John Carter and the martian princess Dejah Thoris, first created in the 1917s under the title A Princess of Mars. But Burroughs wrote other series as well, including 10 books set on Mars that featured the adventures of a hero named John Carter. They are intelligent and capable of organizing themselves into a society, but they are almost to a man all brutish and cruel. They are green-skinned monstrous people who stalk the dead sea bottoms of Barsoom. I have to take a break from our usual subject matter and geek-the-fuck-out for a few minutes, because JOHN CARTER, the movie, is on the way.Įdgar Rice Burroughs is best known for being the creator of Tarzan, about whom he wrote 20+ books between 19. The Green Martians are one of the predominant races of Barsoom.
